Japan is easy to travel and hard to exhaust. Big cities, old temple towns, mountain villages and coastline all sit within a few hours of each other on a reliable rail network.

- Tokyo for city life, food and day trips
- Kyoto and Nara for temples, gardens and old streets
- Osaka for eating and nightlife
- Hakone or the Japanese Alps for mountains and hot springs
- Hiroshima and Miyajima if you have a week or more
What should you do?
- Travel between cities by shinkansen
- Walk a temple route in Kyoto early in the morning
- Spend a night at a ryokan with an onsen
- Visit a morning market or a depachika food hall
What should you eat or experience?
- Regional specialities change city to city: okonomiyaki in Osaka, kaiseki in Kyoto, sushi in Tokyo
- Standing noodle bars and department store food halls are reliable and inexpensive
- Book high-demand restaurants well before you arrive
Where is a good area to stay?
- Tokyo: Shinjuku or Shibuya for convenience, Ginza for quiet
- Kyoto: near Gion or Kyoto Station for transport
- Add one or two nights in a ryokan outside the cities
